TWATD is actually a re-telling of Arabian Nights, and I very much loved that movie. It felt like a scene from the Disney animation movie Aladdin. Anybody else feel that way?
Anyways, let’s jump right into the book!
After the last execution, Shahrzad volunteers to be the next bride of Khalid. Shahrzad does this because she’s taking revenge on Khalid for murdering her best friend. But when she survives the night, things take a dramatic turn on Shahrzad’s life and suddenly the game of whether or not Shahrzad will live begins. As Shahrzad continues to revel in her newfound home and life, she also learns more about its master and her husband, the king. She becomes determined to uncover the secrets that Khalid seems to keep locked away. She achieves this by telling the king stories that eventually expose his motives and demands him to open up to her in a way they might both regret, but as their feelings grow stronger for one another, there’s only one path that they can go.
Ahdieh blew me away with the emotions this story entailed. There are so many things going on that, at the end of the book, come together like puzzle pieces. Ahdieh reveals the lengths that family and friends will go to, to save one another, whether the cause is right or wrong. This is especially emphasized in Shahrzad’s life, seeing that she left behind her remaining family, consisted of her father and sister, but also her childhood sweetheart. Both will go to great lengths to bring her back home safe and from that place they deemed to be her pending execution.
I immensely enjoyed the multiple viewpoints we get to see throughout the book and the major character development that took place mostly with Shahrzad and Khalid and their relationship with one another. I also appreciated Shahrzad’s loyalty and her determination despite the odds she was against.
I look forward to future installments and will definitely be reading the second book.
