I start of reading Laia’s POV first and then we switch off with Elias, this happens throughout the entire book, but one thing that had me going crazy was the fact that we always ended each POV with a flipping cliffhanger . . . seriously.
So a little bit about the book:
In the beginning, Laia had me frustrated, I honestly felt that I was going to end up hating her because of how she was written and how her personality seemed utterly exhausting to read – seeing that she wasn’t as strong of a character (emotionally and physically). But, as the story continued to go on and develop, Laia gradually became stronger and determined to do whatever she could to get her brother back, no matter the cost. Reading this book left me with a massive array of emotions and feels.
And a huge love RECTANGLE. Not even a triangle.
I think that was one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever read. Literally. I mean this was some major love rectangle.
So, yeah, that pretty much sums up the entire love rectangle.
Who else is frickin’ mind boggled and confused? Me too.
An Ember In The Ashes is a fantastical story about a Mask solider, Elias Venturius, and a free girl turned slave, Laia, whom both have, unwittingly, the same goal: to free themselves of the Empire’s wicked hold.
Elias has been a Mask solider ever since he was a little boy, brought in by an Augur* named Cain, to be trained as a Mask. Not only is he the school’s most finest solider, but also the son of the Commandant, who is the commander of the school. Even though he is one of the most powerful, and at revered, he has a secret: he hates the Empire and is preparing to desert. But there are many things that hold him back, things that will change who he is and will become, and his entire future. *Augurs are immortal monk-like people that elect a new Emperor by making them go through a series of trials. |
Laia was a free girl when her grandparents were killed in front of her, a free girl when her brother Darin was torn from her and sent to prison, accused of aiding the Resistance, something he just may not be guilty of. Laia will do anything she must in order to save her brother, including aiding the previously mentioned Resistance and becoming a slave under the Empire’s eye, doing missions that could cost her her life. |
Elias and Laia are thrown together unexpectedly and will do everything they can to fight their enslavement, but how much can they take? How far will they go to gain freedom?
I look forward to the next installment!! I shall keep you all posted on any news I hear on my Home Page.
