Bully by Penelope Douglas was a spine-tingling and an intense read. Douglas had me caught every step of the way! I’ve read this book three times now, so I feel like I know this book by heart. Bully is more than just a tension-building romance, but it’s about healing and being the bigger person. This book was emotionally thought-provoking. There are so many emotions that Bully takes you through that all you have to really do is hold on and enjoy the ride. Honestly, this is exactly what I did . . . even though I knew what happens at the end. |
Our main character is Tatum (Tate) who we meet as a junior in high school. Tate was a great character to read from, though, at times, I wanted to shake her crazy when she gave in to the taunts of her ex-best-friend and bully. As a strong-minded person, I usually speak my mind about things and speak up for myself, so it was a really challenging feat reading from Tate’s POV |
Our other main character is Jared; a flippin’ jerk who needs someone to give it to him bad. He was WAAAYYY too spoiled, like, seriously, the whole school found him to be like a god. I was like: NO, grow up. You’re in high school, when you make some real accomplishments, then I’ll consider your ‘fame’. This was my initial thought of him. But then, we get a few sneak peeks into his life and what made him who he was. Now I’m not saying anybody has the right to treat another person badly just because home-life isn’t as nice as it ought to be. I hate that. Life is hard; you either deal with it or get crushed by people who don’t really give a care.
Yes, I know, I know, Jared’s a fictional character, but you have to be real sometimes. This is me being real.
The story starts off a little jerky, which usually happens when an author is just starting to story-build – sometimes there are gaps, or a certain situation doesn’t seem to add up, but this happens. I feel that Douglas gave a great world for us, making it as realistic as NA Fiction goes. I enjoyed Douglas’ writing style, it was definitely easy-to-read and enjoyable. This is a great book for those who just read a mind-numbing book!
After living in France for a year, she’s come back to make the best of her senior year. Well, as much as she can with an arrogant bully pestering her life at school and anywhere he sees her. But, for the first time in four years, Tate is standing up for herself. No more will she be pushed around. No more will she be timid and weak. She’s ready for Jared this time around. And she’s willing to play dirty.
And just maybe, their hatred will turn them towards another passionate emotion. But, can they see past through all their mistakes? Can Tatum forgive Jared for all the humiliation and embarrassment she’s suffered?
Well, read Bully to find out!
I give Bully 4 out of 5 stars!
